Embrace Your Space

The Chinese believe that natural energy can be utilized to its fullest through proper arrangement. Feng Shui aims at balancing the energy in the environment – natural and structural. Through the use of Feng Shui researchers have noted marked improvements in mood, energy level, attitude and increased levels of productivity and collegiality.

  • Water: Tap the element of water for the north of the office to create career luck, but do not overdo it. Place a small water feature, such as a miniature water foundation, with water continuously moving to signify movement and yang energy.
  • Plants: Plants bring a wonderful vibrant energy associated with growth and success. Flowers must be placed in southeast as this direction represents wealth. Feel free to use every kind of plant (even artificial plants work, but not dried plants and avoid cactus or those with pointed leaves or sharp thorns).
  • Angles: In Feng Shui, always remember that anything sharp is harmful. It needs to be softened, blocked or put out of sight (creepers and vines are excellent to camouflage unfortunate angles). Anything curved and soft encourages the energy in the environment to slow down and transform into friendly energy.
  • Clutter: It is vital to keep the office clean and clutter free. Excessive disarray in the office may cause confusion and disharmony.

Desk Direction Essentials

  • The desk should not directly face the entrance door
  • The desk should not be directly under an exposed overhead beam
  • Place more files on the left side instead of the right side

Quick Tip:

"Any space can benefit from Feng Shui. And for those who work from home, the difference can be night and day. Removing clutter from the office and changing direction of the desk can make a huge difference." – Cathleen McAndless, host of Feng Shui Living
